Pac-12, Mountain West move to resume football seasons; Notre Dame, Tennessee Titans see outbreaks

Citing the availability of better, more rapid testing for Covid-19 infections as a main changing point, the Pac-12 conference last week announced it would “resume its football, basketball and winter sport seasons,” with football games possibly taking place starting Nov. 6.

While the announcement on the conference website noted that “the football season may now commence for those teams that have the necessary state and local health approvals,” the reversal of the conference’s original decision to suspend sports was somewhat expected, after the Big Ten also reversed its earlier suspension and when a new deal to provide more comprehensive testing for athletes was signed.

The Mountain West conference also announced its plans to resume football, after also suspending play earlier this year. However, the virus may yet have the last say in all sporting plans, with Notre Dame recently postpoing a game with Wake Forest due to a Covid-19 outbreak among the Notre Dame team. As of Tuesday, Notre Dame was reporting 25 active cases.

Also on Tuesday, the NFL reported an outbreak of the virus among the Tennessee Titans, which may or may not lead to games being suspended this weekend.

Houston Texans
NRG Stadium
Seating Capacity: 71,054
Wi-Fi – No
DAS – Yes

With Super Bowl LI approaching in 2017, NRG Stadium is rumored to be (finally) getting Wi-Fi, with reports that the deployment will be led by 5 Bars and use gear from Ruckus Wireless; however none of this has yet been formally approved, so for now it’s another fall with no Wi-Fi at NRG.

Indianapolis Colts
Lucas Oil Stadium
Seating Capacity: 63,000
Wi-Fi – Yes
DAS – Yes

According to stats from this year’s Final Four basketball weekend, the Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity at Lucas Oil Stadium is working just fine, with just about 11 terabytes of traffic measured over the hoops-happy weekend. According to organizers, the stadium’s Wi-Fi carried more than 5 TB of traffic, which should prove stable enough for Colts fans this fall.

Jacksonville Jaguars
EverBank Field
Seating Capacity: 67,297
Wi-Fi – Yes
DAS – No

Jacksonville fans who are not inside one of the two pools at EverBank Field can use the free Wi-Fi provided by Extreme and SignalShare, with bandwidth provided by Comcast. EverBank also has Wi-Fi “coaches” to help fans connect to the network, reportedly wearing bright yellow hats.

Tennessee Titans
Nissan Stadium
Seating Capacity: 69,149
Wi-Fi – Yes
DAS – Yes

Another outfit by Extreme Networks, Titans fans are into the second year of stadium-wide Wi-Fi, at the newly named “Nissan Stadium” thanks to a sponsor change this summer.

Houston Texans
NRG Stadium
Seating Capacity: 71,054
Wi-Fi – No
DAS-No
Beaconing – No

The Houston Texans have lots of holes to fill after a 2-14 season last year. Is a new coach, the number one draft pick to play alongside J.J. Watt, and one of best wideouts and running backs in the game a recipe for success in 2014? We’ll see. One area that won’t improve in 2014 is stadium connectivity. With no Wi-Fi, Texans fans will struggle to check their fantasy stats at games.

Indianapolis Colts

Lucas Oil Stadium
Seating Capacity: 63,000
Wi-Fi-Yes
DAS-Yes
Beaconing – No

After an exciting home playoff win last season, Colts fans are ready for another promising year. Lucas Oil Stadium enters its sixth season and another year with Wi-Fi upgrades. The facility is another beneficiary of hosting a recent Super Bowl, which brings lots of carrier spending to ensure a quality experience for the big game. There are no specifics on access points or DAS antennas, but the organization is encouraging fans to test the upgrades by watching the last play, checking the latest stats, and sharing photos with friends. Indianapolis is doing everything to make Lucas Oil Stadium the best place to catch the Colts on Sunday.

Jacksonville Jaguars
EverBank Field
Seating Capacity: 67,297
Wi-Fi-Yes
DAS-No
Beaconing – No

Any guesses where the largest video boards are in the world? That’s right. EverBank Field in Jacksonville. The Jaguars installed two video boards that showcase almost 22,000 (!) square feet of digital canvas. The video boards are the highlight of a $63 million dollar renovation to the stadium that also includes not just one – but two swimming pools. Yes, a pool. And cabanas. The Jaguars are teaming up with Extreme Networks and SignalShare to deliver Wi-Fi access to fans for this season. No DAS yet, but expect more upgrades to follow soon at EverBank.

Tennessee Titans
LP Field
Seating Capacity: 69,149
Wi-Fi-Yes
DAS-Yes
Beaconing – No

Another outfit by Extreme Networks, Titans fans will be able to connect this fall to Wi-Fi at LP Field. It’s a major upgrade from years past, as new owner Tommy Smith continues to deliver on his promise of changes to the organization. The Wi-Fi was expected to be in full use for all home games this NFL season.

Tennessee Titans pick Extreme Networks for LP Field Wi-Fi deployment

LP FieldThe Tennessee Titans picked Extreme Networks to provide a Wi-Fi deployment at LP Field in Nashville, Tenn., becoming the third NFL team to choose Extreme gear for wireless connectivity.

Along with Wi-Fi integrator PCM, Extreme said in a press release Monday that it will bring both its Wi-Fi networking gear as well as its analytics software to the Titans, to provide a free-for-fans wireless network to all parts of the 69,143-seat LP Field. Previously, Extreme had built Wi-Fi networks for the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles.

Extreme may have a leg up when it comes to securing more NFL Wi-Fi deals, thanks to a deal announced earlier this year under which Extreme is the league’s “official provider” of Wi-Fi analytics. Though the deal doesn’t automatically provide Extreme with any signed contracts, in the follow-me world of sports technology deployments one successful implementation plus an endorsement from the league means that at the very least Extreme is on most short lists when NFL teams are seeking Wi-Fi providers. The company is also known for implementing the Wi-Fi coaches idea, where network-knowledgeable employees roam the stands at games to help fans connect to the Wi-Fi.

“Our fans are our number one priority, so being able to provide an enhanced experience for them is a tremendous opportunity,” said Don MacLachlan, executive vice president of administration and facilities for the Titans, in a prepared statement. “The partnership with Extreme will not only positively change the in-game atmosphere but will also allow us to garner deeper insights into how fans interact with their devices while they are in the stadium. Extreme’s Wi-Fi and analytics solution is unparalleled and we are confident we will receive encouraging feedback.”

According to Extreme the network is scheduled to be live in time for the start of the season. The Titans’ first home game of the regular season this year is Sept. 14 against the Dallas Cowboys.
