Watching Golf Profile: Shot Link and Shot Tracker — How Wireless + Lasers + Volunteers Makes Golf Stats Come Alive

When you watch golf on TV — or online — do you ever wonder exactly how the commentators know, within seconds, how far a player is from the green? Or from a bunker or hazard? If you are a golf veteran you may know of something called Shot Link, which somehow uses lasers to figure out the distance in seconds. But do you really know how it all works? And why it needs a wireless network and a whole bunch of volunteer help to bring it together every week?

Here at MSR we have been entranced this year with an app on the PGA Tour website called Shot Tracker. On the surface it looks just like an online leaderboard — until you glance at it while a tournament is going on, and you see all kinds of little graphics going in motion. Only then do you realize that hey — this thing is showing every shot on the course! — and if you are like me you are instantly addicted, watching seven different scores at once, to see how Tiger did out of the rough, how Phil did out of the trap, and whether Jason Day made that 40-foot, 4-inch putt.

Naturally, we wanted to know how it all worked so we put in a call to the PGA and eventually got on the horn with Steve Evans, a senior vice president in the PGA’s information systems department. Evans was kind enough to walk us through the amazing behind-the-scenes technology of Shot Link and Shot Tracker, both of which will likely play a huge role as the tour embraces more mobile data consumption options for its stats-insatiable fans.

The key to understanding Shot Tracker is to know about Shot Link, the system that is the heart and soul of instant PGA statistics. Shot Tracker, which is an app on the PGA’s website, gets all its data from Shot Link, the system set up on each course. On the Shot Link site the PGA describes the system thusly:

The ShotLink System is a revolutionary platform for collecting and disseminating scoring and statistical data on every shot by every player in real-time. The vision of the system is to “Turn data into information, information into knowledge, and knowledge into entertainment.”

According to Evans the two technological keys to Shot Link are wireless handheld devices for entering data about shots, and laser-based survey equipment, which as you might guess provides an accurate distance from laser to a golf ball lying in the grass. With every group of golfers in a PGA Tour event covered by Shot Link there is one person walking with the group as a scorer, entering information like “shot hit” when someone swings at a ball. On each hole there are also handheld and tower-located laser stations, to get fixes on balls in the fairways, rough, sand, and on the green.

The final piece to the Shot Link system is a huge graphical database of every course the PGA plays on, mapped for distances. Via triangulation from their laser stations and some sophisticated computer programs the Shot Link system can almost instantly calculate distances to greens, hazards and other places on their map — which the tour can then relay to commentators in the broadcast booths, making them seem like complete wizards of distance. But it turns out, there’s a lot of elves running around making the wizards look good.

Wireless Networks, and Lots of Volunteers

In addition to some impressive techno-firepower — Evans said the PGA has three different Shot Track setups that leapfrog each other going from venue to venue, with computer servers and office space in separate 53-foot trailers — at each venue the tour must draft up to 350 volunteers to staff the scoring system. When you start thinking about two-person crews for each tower laser, with one tower on par-3 holes, two on par-4s and three on par-5s, plus walking scorers, plus walking laser holders, plus several shifts to cover all the golfers at a tourney — the volunteer needs add up. But Evans said the drafting is actually getting easier each year.

“We have about an 80 percent retention rate” of volunteers signing up year after year, Evans said.

The PGA also installs its own wireless network on each site, using approximately 22 access points, putting antennas up in the air a bit so that there is good coverage for all the handheld scoring devices and the lasers. Evans said the PGA also has sophisticated enough software to check for data anomalies, and if a question comes up the answer can be confirmed if necessary via a voice radio.

What you have, in the end, is some incredible real-time data gathering being used to fuel stats and graphics that help bring the game to life, both in information relayed to TV broadcast crews as well as delivered directly to fans via apps like Shot Tracker.

And it’s not just distances that Shot Link provides. At the recent FedEx St. Jude Classic, it seemed like a lot of guys were rinsing their shots into water hazards. So a query was run against Shot Link data, and sure enough it showed that over 9 years there were more balls hit in the water at the FedEx than at any other course. Now that’s turning knowledge into entertainment.

On the drawing board is a new version of Shot Tracker, the addictive app that uses Shot Link data to show where and how players are playing on a leaderboard. Since the current version was built using Adobe Flash technology, it can’t be easily shown on Apple iPhones and iPads, since those devices don’t support Flash programs.

“Our road map [for Shot Tracker] is multi-platform, with lots of talk about mobile devices,” Evans said. He also hinted there might be a different user interface, perhaps one more like the one recently used for the U.S. Open that showed different playing groups on a graphical map of the course. That app, however, didn’t show shot by shot data, the killer app thing that Shot Link brings to the table.

As wireless electronics get better and cheaper, who knows what the future will bring — perhaps wireless microchips in each ball? For now, Shot Link and Shot Tracker are pretty darn good, and for that we can thank the PGA IT folks and the many, many volunteers who push the buttons and sight the lasers.

“It’s been kind of neat, to figure out how to build something like Shot Link,” Evans said. Golf fans everywhere, no doubt, agree.

WSJ: NFL Scrambling to Add Digital Access so Fans Stay in Seats

In more than one story we have noted the main reason for pro teams putting wireless networks into stadiums: The possibility that fans will skip buying tickets if the at-game experience has poor connectivity.

In a story Friday from the Wall Street Journal it’s apparent that even the most popular sport in the country — the National Football League — is feeling the pressure to add to the digital experience, because the number of fans who come to the games is dropping. According to the story, the NFL — which is already on record saying it wants to put Wi-Fi in all stadiums — is considering a host of additional digital-access moves, including expanded in-stadium video replays for mobile devices and lightening up on its ridiculous (our opinion) TV blackout rules.

The money quote from the story, which can probably be applied to any major sport these days:

With declines in ticket sales each of the past five years, average game attendance is down 4.5% since 2007, while broadcast and online viewership is soaring. The NFL is worried that its couch-potato options—both on television and on mobile devices—have become good enough that many fans don’t see the point of attending an actual game.

“The at-home experience has gotten better and cheaper, while the in-stadium experience feels like it hasn’t,” said Eric Grubman, the NFL’s executive vice president of ventures and business operations. “That’s a trend that we’ve got to do something about.”

Google Delivers 7-inch tablet, the Nexus 7; Google Q Streaming Media CE device

Google has delivered a host of new features for its Android operating system as well as a co-developed 7-inch tablet and its first consumer electronics device that is designed to unify and play the data that you might have stored in the cloud.

The tablet was developed along with partner Asus and is called the Nexus 7, a 7-inch tablet that will take on everything from products from rival’s Amazon’s Kindle , Barnes and Noble’s Nook, Microsoft’s Surface and Apple’s iPad to just name a few.

The $199 tablet features a Nvidia Tegra 3 quad core processor as well as a12 core Nvidia Tegra application processor that will run the just announced next generation Android operating system 4.1, code-named Jelly Bean and has a 1280 x 800 pixel display.

The Nexus 7 is designed to work with other Android devices so a user can start reading a book on their phone and pick up on where they were on the tablets. It supports interactive articles that enable a user to go from an article in a magazine to say a video showing an exercise being described in the article.

The Nexus 7 is built around using the company’s Google Play store as a center of usage and said that it is available now for preorder with shipment expected for mid-July. It will come with a $25 credit to spend in the Google Play store as well as free books, magazines and others.

The company also showed its Nexus Q, a black ball that is a social media streaming device that a user can control via another Android device and is designed to access data and media that is stored in the cloud.

Designed to be set up from your phone it is essentially jukebox and movie player, and as the ability to serve as a center that allows your friends to add songs or movies from their devices to the playlist, and anyone can take control and rearrange the playlist to suit their tastes. Same with movies and YouTube videos. It will run Android 4.0 and feature 16GB of internal storage and have both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities.

The company displayed its Google Glass project, much to surprise of the audience. The live Google Glass demo started by showing ski divers in a blimp over San Francisco equipped with glasses. They jumped from the blimp and the glasses enabled the audience at the Moscone Center, and online viewers, to follow the divers as they descended onto the roof of the building.

They also employed bikers doing flips on the roof top and then building climbers to drop down the side of the building, all wearing the glasses. It was a very impressive live demonstration and I suspect it will give users of cameras such as GoPro a moment of pause.

But the company does not envision the Glasses to be just for recording information and video for friends but also make it easier to access information via your glasses rather than taking out a smartphone, unlocked it and then do a search for the required information.

The Glasses in Project Glass feature and array of technology including a display, a camera, a processor and memory to store what is being recorded as well as a touch pad, microphone, small speaker, sensors including gyroscopes as well as multiple radios for data communications.

Project Glass is still a work in process and the company was asking for feedback to see what else the audience, which features many of its top developers, would also like to have in the devices. It announced the Google Glass Explorer addition for developers and admitted it was still a rough product. Hopefully some of this will make it to YouTube.

Forgive Me, USGA: I Used my Cell Phone on the Golf Course

Forgive me, USGA, for I have sinned. If I could, I would call a penalty on myself for violating one of your rules — though I’m not sure how many strokes it would cost me for using a cell phone on the course during U.S. Open competition.

The truth is, I’m not really repentant. The crime was worth it, and I’d do it again. It’s just too compelling to use a mobile device to get information you can’t get otherwise, and to enrich the experience of watching something live. For many reasons, live golf is a perfect atmosphere for second-screen access and instant communication. There’s lots of downtime in between the action, perfect for catching up on what’s happening on the rest of the course, or for sharing our experience with absent friends. Or for keeping up with work while we’re sneaking away to watch golf.

So it’s you, not me, USGA, who needs to change. Soon. So that all the fans who love golf enough to show up in person can share my secret pleasures from Friday, which included being able to watch play on the 14th hole, live, while sitting alone in the sun on the side of the 17th fairway.

Let it be noted that I committed this crime using the USGA’s own very fine U.S. Open app. And its wonderful live video feature. How can I comply with your rules when your very own programmers have built such a beautiful HD-quality viewing mechanism? It was just too good to resist.

To be clear, as a media member I was authorized to have a cellular device on the grounds — under the stipulation that I use it only in the media tent. Why did I not comply? Basically, because, USGA, you have an information-gap problem. In other sports like baseball, teams are putting in advanced digital access because they are worried about competing with the couch — they don’t want fans to stay home because the experience there will be better than the ballpark.

At the U.S. Open you may not have that problem, since golf’s best test will almost certainly always be a sellout, like it was this week in San Francisco. And I get it that you want to go old-school and not have electronic scoreboards everywhere you look. But the quaint stuff only goes so far. The simple biggest problem I saw out on the course Friday was that many fans — your patrons — had no friggin idea who was in the lead, who was in the hunt, or where particular players were on the course. And that took away from the experience.

Couch potatoes at home or distracted folks at work had much better info at their finger tips or laptop screens — while watching online at home in the morning I was loving the Playtracker scoring feature on the U.S. Open website, which showed in a graphic view of the course who was playing which hole, and what their up-to-date stats were. And the USGA’s Open Twitter feed is fabulous, providing up-to-the-second info and compelling links. At Olympic we were stuck looking at small scoreboards that were hard to see in the setting sun.

At one point, standing alongside the 17th fairway we all had no idea whether Tiger birdied or bogeyed No. 7, and when the scoreboard changed his stats you couldn’t tell if the “1” was red or green because of the way the sunlight was hitting the board. Luckily someone wearing one of those earpiece radios came by and set us all straight. But the future of live golf shouldn’t be a bunch of zombies all listening silently. Give us some easy to understand rules, and let our cell phones be free so that we can view and share information to enrich our on-site experience.

I get it that overzealous picture-taking fans, like those who ticked off Phil at the Memorial, are to be avoided. But why not try some clear, simple rules with clear penalties? Say, anyone who doesn’t turn their ringer sound down and takes an audible picture gets escorted off the grounds — just like belligerent drunks. You don’t let the few over-imbibers keep the rest of us from enjoying a cold beer; don’t let bad cell users keep the rest of us from being able to stay connected to stats and views during the inevitable downtimes between groups.

Nobody cared that I was transgressing Friday, probably because I was discreet and know the simple trick of turning my volume to vibrate. I have faith that most other golf fans will similarly comply — hell, several people in the group I was around on 17 even turned around to stop a USGA cart that was loudly headed up the path while Tiger was trying to make birdie. Real golf fans get it, that players want quiet to do their thing. So why not try tricks like a ban on cell-phone pictures around tees and greens? And set up some “Tweet tents” or Wi-Fi zones far away from sensitive action areas? Not only will that keep sad, unconnected fans happy, but I smell a Starbucks sponsorship. Make this something where everyone wins.

If you need some help, I am happy to volunteer to be part of a research committee to determine what fans want to do, and how the experience can work for everyone. It was heartening to talk to USGA officials this week and hear that they understand that people want to use their digital devices while at competitions. Let’s hope this happens sooner rather than later, so my days of crime can come to an end.

MSR Profile: San Francisco Giants, AT&T Continue to Push the Wireless Envelope at AT&T Park

It’s fun to look back at the news from 2004 to see just how novel an idea it was to put a Wi-Fi network into a ballpark. “SBC Park a hot spot for fans lugging laptops,” said an article in the San Francisco Chronicle, complete with a photo of a fan hunched over a laptop. According to the story, some 200 fans per game might have used the network right after it was launched. Woo-hoo!

Fast forward to 2012, and here are some eye-popping stats from a recent Giants homestand against the Cubs: According to the Giants and AT&T, at one game there were 10,000 fans using the stadium’s Wi-Fi network, and another 10,000 connecting via the various cellular antennas — all using a data app, not even counting phone calls. Still think this is just something for power geeks trying to program in between innings? Or has the wireless fan finally become mainstream?

As impressive as those totals are, what’s a more compelling story is the fact that the Giants and AT&T were ready for that bandwidth demand, with a layered cellular and Wi-Fi network that overdelivers, instead of dropping connections. Why did they put the network in, and how did they make it a success — and a role model for stadiums and teams everywhere? To get the answer to those questions, Mobile Sports Report recently spent a couple hours at the ballpark with Bill Schlough, senior vice president and chief information officer for the San Francisco Giants Baseball Club, and Terry Stenzel, vice president and general manager for Northern California and Reno for AT&T, to hear about lessons learned and where wireless and sports are headed in the future.

The Super-Connected Fans of San Francisco and Silicon Valley

Back when AT&T was still known as SBC, the ballpark with its name seemed as likely a place as any to put in a wireless network. Though it wasn’t even the first in the Bay area — Candlestick Park, former home of the Giants and still host to the football 49ers, had some limited wireless access back in 2000 thanks to then-stadium-naming sponsor 3Com — the network that went live at the China Basin ballpark in 2004 was well received by the wired constituents of the greater SF Bay area. After all, this was Silicon Valley — where folks didn’t mind going to Best Buy to get a wireless LAN card to put in a PCMCIA slot.

For the Giants and Schlough, every year afterward it became apparent that the initial outlay of 121 Wi-Fi access points wasn’t going to be enough. The 50 bearded guys with laptops from the Valley became a few hundred a night, then pushed into the thousands. By 2010, the network-use number was up to 3,300 per game, with no end in sight to its growth.

“I point to the fans” when asked about where the vision for the network comes from, said Schlough. “In any other city it’d probably be different — anywhere else is probably a couple years behind [in network demand]. Fans here are making it apparent that if they can’t stay connected they’re going to stay home. What we need to do is stay one step ahead.”

Lately, that means staying ahead by blending cellular and Wi-Fi networks, using a “layered” approach that improves not only Wi-Fi coverage inside the stadium, but also reception for 2G, 3G and 4G LTE cell phones. It even means reaching out to rival Verizon Wireless, which is in the process of attaching its own wireless services to the Giants’ stadium network, so that Verizon customers can enjoy improved coverage just like AT&T customers do when in their seats. Even with network loads of 20,000 combined users, the Giants and AT&T right now seem like they’re ahead of the technology curve; but even fairly recently, that wasn’t always the case. Take the start of the 2009 season, when the network became, as AT&T’s Stenzel said, “an absolute disaster.”

A Network Brought to its Knees — by Apps and the iPhone

Perhaps fueled by the twin arrivals in 2008 of the iPhone 3G and the accompanying Apple Appstore, the fan demand for in-stadium bandwidth completely overwhelmed the AT&T Park network at the start of the 2009 season, an epic fail that was quickly noticed by many. The surge in wireless data demand — which also caught AT&T by surprise at that year’s South by Southwest Interactive conference, where iPhones and Twitter brought the network in Austin to a halt — was a harbinger of the future, forcing cellular providers everywhere to scramble to upgrade their networks.

While Schlough and AT&T responded by doing what they could to fine tune and increase wireless bandwidth, the duo also started installing what is known in the cellular industry as DAS — short for Distributed Antenna System, basically an array of small cellular antennas that improve coverage by bringing the wireless signal closer to the customer. For AT&T Park, that means as close as inside the hallway of the stadium’s suite level, where DAS antennas disguised by small plastic inverted cones keep the well-heeled fans and their inevitable iPhones connected to the outside world.

The DAS antennas help provide what Schlough and Stenzel call their “layered” approach to wireless connectivity, meaning that a blend of Wi-Fi and improved cellular is the best way to achieve the highest level of connectivity. With a layered approach, some fans can use the Wi-Fi network while others use the cellular network — hopefully, using the best signal where it is available.

“The stadium is the perfect example of what’s going on in the outside world,” said AT&T’s Stenzel, whose company of late is investing heavily in both DAS and Wi-Fi for public hotspots in cities, big buildings and campuses to offload some of its cellular-network demand. “You can’t build a network with Wi-Fi only or [4G] LTE only. You need layers of technology.”

“Cellular sometimes flows better around obstacles or people,” Schlough said. And he should know, since he said he’s always finding new ways to improve the network.

“Thank god we’re not football,” said Schlough. “This isn’t something that you plug it in and it works. We have 81 games a season here, and every day we’re learning something.”

Trials, Errors, and ‘Leaky Coax’

For Giants fans or even other visitors, Schlough has a wireless quest: “I’d challenge anyone to walk in here and find 100 antennas,” he said. With 334 Wi-Fi access points and 196 additional DAS antennas scattered about that seems like it might be easy. But even certified network geeks probably couldn’t spot the DAS antenna that Schlough said was in plain sight, providing access to the outdoor seats on the suite level.

While your reporter valiantly looked for a telltale wireless box, it was in vain. Schlough finally solved the puzzle by turning us around and pointing at a black-painted conduit pipe just above the seagull net — inside which Schlough said was some leaky coax, or partially unshielded networking cable that allows a signal to pass through parts of its length, in essence acting as a long, thin “antenna.”

“You’ve got to get creative” to solve stadium networking problems, said Schlough, whose team needed to point Wi-Fi antennas upward to serve three rows of upper-deck seats that are located in front of a thick concrete wall. In some parts of the stadium, Wi-Fi antennas are painted dark green to match the stadium metalwork. In the suites, Wi-Fi antennas are tucked into plastic housings that look like smoke detectors, and some DAS antennas are inside small inverted plastic cones — all painted the same color as the ceilings to blend in like wireless chameleons.

“The biggest challenge may be in hiding all the wires” connecting the antennas, Stenzel said. “Nobody wants to see wires hanging down in a stadium.”

One App Will Rule Them All — Unless the Giants get to Tinker

Perhaps the only place where Schlough, the Giants and AT&T have had to take a step backwards — our opinion, not theirs — is on the application side. Until last year, the Giants led in the app innovation arena as well, with a service called “Digital Dugout” which provided lots of AT&T-specific information, like park maps, food ordering, and extended Giants video highlights, among other features. But as part of Major League Baseball the Giants are now in lockstep with the rest of the league and only offer MLB.com’s AtBat app as the in-game app of choice — a strategic move made by the league last year to increase the profitability of its flagship online app and service.

“When we were building the network up and had 3,300 users per game in 2010, there was nobody else doing what we did, and nobody had an eye on us,” Schlough said. Now, with in-game network usage nearing 30 percent plus, the moneymen of baseball aren’t just looking at in-stadium apps, they already have a strategy to put a network in every stadium, and get every fan there using AtBat. What Schlough hopes is that MLB will let teams leverage and add their own features and garlic-fries flavor to the AtBat app, an idea that hasn’t yet reached any conclusion.

“We’re working with MLB to see if we can add any [local] functionality to AtBat,” Schlough said. “We’re the first team to dip our toes into that water.”

Internally, the Giants have become big wireless users themselves. According to Schlough the team now uses its wireless network to run tasks like ticketing, some concession kiosks, the media needs and digital message boards. That’s probably why the team now has two full network-operation rooms in the bowels of AT&T Park, crammed with every flavor of telecom gear from 2G, 3G and 4G cellular to Wi-Fi controllers and a whole assortment of Internet routers, servers and other associated rack-mounted hardware sporting the logos of companies like Cisco, Juniper, Dell and HP.

But after spending some $10 million to build the network over time — a cost shared by the Giants and AT&T, whose unique relationship is intertwined in the stadium sponsorship — in the end, it’s about the fan experience and ensuring fans stay for the experience that keeps Schlough, Stenzel and their teams running to stay in the lead.

“The most common app we see used at the games is maps,” said Stenzel. “It’s all about, ‘where am I going from here,’ for dinner or drinks. A ballgame is a social event, a fan experience that you’re going to remember.”

As long as you stay — and stay connected, that is.

“Now if the DAS goes down, people leave,” Schlough said. And you get the feeling that he was only half joking.

USGA Considering Allowing Cell Phones on Course — But Not This Week

It looks like the USGA was ready for questions about its cell phone policy, as executives from the country’s governing body of golf were all on message Monday saying generally positive things about considering allowing cell phone use during tournament days in the future — while keeping its ban in place for this year’s U.S. Open in San Francisco.

“We’re comfortable with the current policy [of banning cell phones during competition days] but also looking about what to do for the future,” said Joe Goode, managing director of communications for the USGA, in a quick press-room interview Monday.

The question of fans using cell phones on courses is a hot topic given the recent incident at the Memorial tourney in Ohio, where star player Phil Mickelson withdrew reportedly in part because of too many fans snapping cell-phone pictures while he was trying to golf. This year the PGA has allowed fans to have cell phones at all events for the first time. However, major tourney organizers like the Masters and the USGA (which conducts the U.S. Open) set their own rules, and for the Open this week fans won’t even be allowed to bring cell phones to the course once competition starts on Thursday. On practice days like Monday fans can bring as big a camera as they want, apparently. And nobody seemed to care that I was snapping some photos with a cell phone, though maybe it’s because I had a media badge around my neck.

Media and other VIP folks at the Open may bring cell phones in for use in approved areas like the press tent, but today we had to pass through metal detectors and get a special sticker for our cell phones to show they were approved devices, which seems a bit extreme. But it seems like Goode and other USGA types (including top boss Mike Davis, who told ESPN’s Bob Harig about the same thing) are recognizing that cellular phones have already become as regular a pocket or purse companion as a wallet or car keys, and that all-out bans seem a bit stone age, especially to folks who rely on them for important communications to family members, to work or just for posts to Twitter.

What Goode seemed to be saying — and I am paraphrasing here — is that the USGA gets it, they’re not going to ban phones forever, and they believe that there probably is a way to do things that works for fans as well as sensitive players.

They’re just not ready to say exactly what it is, though, so after Wednesday it’ll be time for fans this year to leave their cell phones at home.

But hey, you can always use the phones at tents like this one to call people — but who uses a phone to make calls anymore? What they really need — and I think some PGA stops like Pebble Beach have already tried things like this — is special areas around the course with Wi-Fi access, where fans can get their online Jones without having to bug Phil or Bubba. Now if the Open here in San Francisco had a Twitter tent, that would be forward thinking and hometown cool. Maybe some Twitter folks can jump on BART and do some kind of foo-camp setup (with appropriate sponsoring dollars) before Thursday?
