If you are interested in tonight’s opening match of the Final Round of 2014 FIFA World Cup Qualifying that will have the U.S. team playing Honduras the U.S. Soccer Federation has just made it easier for you to stay abreast of the news.

The Federation has again expanded its digital presence, this time with a Facebook app as well as a new digital magazine called ‘Anthem’, with the first issue of the free publication now available online. The magazine is currently only available for iPad and iPhone users but an Android version is expected soon.

The interactive Facebook app, called Supporters XI, provides a different experience for users. They can select virtual lineups from Coach Jurgen Klinsmann’s roster of 24 players, putting them in one of 10 different formations, and can share their lineups with their friends.

There are also other methods to follow the team including the ability to watch matches online, including today’s versus Honduras by heading to on ussoccer.com’s MatchTracker, or you can follow the conversation on Twitter at @ussoccer. If you are interested in images from the match, and ones from the past you can check out the team’s Instagram page.

Tonight’s US/Honduras match is one of three CONCACAF regional qualifying matches being played today, the others being Jamaica at Mexico and Costa Rica at Panama. The second set of group games is scheduled for March 22, when the U.S. Soccer team will host Costa Rica.

For this qualifying round, which will run through October, each team will play 10 matches with the top three earning automatic advances to next year’s World Cup and the fourth place team going to a home and away qualifier against the first place team from the Oceania Football Confederation with the winner advancing to the World Cup.

talkSPORT opens Barclays Premier League Commentary to World via Twitter

I am always looking for new ways to experience sports and I stumbled upon talkSPORT Live, which seems a bit slow on my part since on the sports radio program has been around for a dozen years but all my teachers said I was a slow learner.

Anyway the service has now joined forces with Twitter in what will be good news for fans of the Barclay Premier League Football as they will combine to provide live streaming of live commentary of the matches using talkSPORT Live’s audio player embedded in an enhanced Twitter profile page at twitter.com/talkSPORTLive.
The broadcasts will reach outside of the talkSPORT traditional market and aside from English it will be broadcast in Spanish and Mandarin/ I wonder what the demographics show about its Chinese listeners?

The move comes as talkSPORT seeks to expand its profile internationally and one of the big moves has been the launch of talkSPORT Live. The program has live commentary on the games and is available both live and on demand in case you wish to go back and see commentary on a past match.

However this is only part of its international push. Earlier this year it signed an exclusive four year deal with the Premier League audio broadcasting rights, from the 2012/13 season to the 2015/16 season.

talkSPORT Live also has broadcast partners across five continents including SiriusXM in the USA and Canada, TSN and TEAM stations in Canada, Brila FM in Nigeria, Citi FM in Ghana, SBS in Australia, Radio Sport in New Zealand and Astro stations in Malaysia who all broadcast the station’s Barclays Premier League commentary.

ESPN keeps the Pedal Down with Summer Soccer Broadcasts

Fresh off strong viewership numbers from the recently concluded Euro 2012 tournament ESPN will be broadcasting a series of international club matches over the next three weeks, with the first match coming last night with the Seattle Sounders vs. Chelsea FC (sorry I missed it).

The matches have a very interesting mix of teams with three teams each from the English Premier League, Major League Soccer, two from Italy’s Serie A, and one from Spain’s La Liga and the Scottish Premier League.

As is to be expected the broadcasts will be all over the networks properties and all but one will be on its ESPN2 channel, while also showing the matches on ESPN3 and ESPN Deportes channels as well in most cases.

The rest of the broadcasts are:
Tue, July 24 10:30 pm ET Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Tottenham Hotspur ESPN3
Wed, July 25 6:30 pm ET Liverpool FC vs. AS Roma ESPN2/3 ESPN Desportes
Sat, July 25 1:00 pm ET Liverpool FC vs. Tottenham Hotspur ESPN2/3 ESPN Desportes
Sat, July 25 6:30 pm ET Chelsea FC vs. AC Milan ESPN2/3 ESPN Desportes
Tue, July 31 7 pm ET NY Red Bulls vs. Tottenham Hotspur ESPN2/3 ESPN Desportes
Thur, August 2 10:30 pm ET Los Angeles Galaxy vs. Real Madrid ESPN2/3 ESPN Deportes
Wed, August 8 8 pm ET Real Madrid vs. AC Milan ESPN2/3 ESPN Deportes
Sat, August 11 1:55 pm ET Real Madrid vs. Celtic FC ESPN2/3 ESPN Deportes

This will be a nice fill in until the major European leagues start up in a month or so. The premier League starts Sat. August 18th while the La Liga starts the following day.

Augmented Sports App Helps Celebrate Start of French Soccer Season

GoldRun and Front Row Marketing Services have teamed with The Ligue de Football Professionnel to create an app that enables fans to create uploadable images of themselves and the Trophee Des Champions that is awarded to the winner of an annual grudge match.

The Trophee Des Champions is the award given to the winner of the annual match between the Ligue 1 champion and the winner of the Copue de France. In one format or another it has been played since 1949 and in its current mode since 1995. The match marks the beginning of the French soccer season.

While it might seem a bit odd that the match opening the season would be played on a foreign shore, the purpose is to help promote French soccer and it has been played in Montreal and Tunis, Tunisia in the past.

The app is not just so that fans can download images of the trophy and then share with their fans, it is a contest in which the winners will get a VIP paid trip to see the match between the two champions at the Red Bull Arena in Harrison, N.J. on July 28, 2012.

The contest is pretty simply to play as long as you participate in social media. A user downloads the GoldRun app that is available for both Android and Apple’s iPhone, and then they need to open the app and then sign in using either Twitter or Facebook.

From there the process is pretty simple, select the Trophée des Champions “photobooth” from
either the featured carousel or campaigns list and then follow the instructions. Once you create your image then share via Facebook, Twitter or email. Sharing enables you to actually enter the contest.

GoldRun is a mobile app that enables the superimposing of a computer generated image with one from a smartphone camera. The app has been used in a variety of contests designed to promote brands including Ice Age: Continental Drift and New York Giants Virtual Super Bowl Ring.

New Rules for International Soccer- Video Replay included

The International Football Association Board (IFAB) held a special meeting yesterday and passed several decisions that will result in new rules for the game, with one of the decisions relating to goal line technology to review goals.

If anybody was watching the just concluded Euro 2012 they no doubt saw the Ukrainian team denied a goal against England, a goal that would have been allowed if technology had been in place to review the incident.

The new technology, which has been tested for the last nine months, will be slowly implemented after a unanimous vote and is now subject to installations in stadiums and a final quality check. The technology will only be used for goals and no other areas, such as diving.

However the issue of diving might be addressed by a second resolution that passed unanimously, that of adding two additional assistant referees to the game, following a two year experiment UEFA Champions League, Europa League and EURO 2012, as well as the AFC President’s Cup and competitions in Brazil, France, Morocco and Qatar.

The last resolution passed was the allowing of players to wear headscarves. This will be allowed temporarily and the composition, color and other features of the scarves will be decided later this year.

ESPN’s Euro 2012 Broadcasts Drawing Strong Viewership

ESPN is continuing to draw strong viewership for its Euro 2012 soccer broadcast through last weekend’s quarterfinals, with the Italy versus England match last Sunday leading the way.

The quarterfinal rounds witnessed a slight increase in viewership overall, compared to the opening round, 1.4 million versus 1.3 million, while the top match on Sunday drew an average of 2.96 million viewers.

One of the interesting aspects of the viewership numbers is how well it is doing on week days. While the Italy/England match drawing double the viewership of the weekday matches, most people I know work at 2:30 pm, so quite a few are sneaking away to catch some of the action. I suspect that with the finals, played on a Sunday, will destroy the Italy/Germany numbers as more and more fans are tuning in to catch the matches.

Overall the first two rounds of the Euro 2012 championship, which was a total of 28 games, saw an average of 1.1 million viewers, up 63% from the same 28 matches four years ago, with the quarterfinals up 31% over the same period of time.

ESPN is also continuing to see strong viewership on its on-line and other broadcast properties. Online the quarterfinals saw ESPN’s two soccer properties, ESPNFC and ESPNsoccernet.com average 878,000 daily visitors and 3.1 million page views per day globally. Four years ago, when ESPN only had Soccernet its three online properties, including ESPNdesportes.com are up 24%, 13% and 132%. ESPN3 and WatchESPN had 2.1 million unique viewers, with computer usage to watch the games up 688% compared to four years ago.

Compared to ESPNsoccernet.com during the same time period for EURO 2008, the site is up 24 percent, 13 percent and 132 percent, respectively. In total, ESPNFC.com, ESPNsoccernet.com and ESPNdeportes.com generated 13.3 million total page views during the quarterfinals, up 14.6 percent compared to EURO 2008.
The Semifinals begin later today at 2:30 ET with Portugal vs. Spain and then tomorrow at the same time for the Germany vs. Italy match. The finals will begin at 2:30 on Sunday.
