PlayUp Hosts ‘Hangout Rooms’ with Former NCAA Stars Williams, Horford, Knight

If you’re looking to get some top-level NCAA insight in advance of tonight’s men’s championship game (starts at 8 p.m. Eastern), fan interaction app PlayUp is hosting “hangout rooms” with former NCAA stars Jay Williams, Brandon Knight and Al Horford. By using the free downloadable PlayUp app you can join the former college hoopsters for in-game interaction, social media style.

I always thought Horford and his Gators teams were among the best tournament teams ever — not necessarily great players but together in a one-and-done format they seemed unstoppable. Will have to stop by his PlayUp room tonight to see what he thinks of this year’s Kentucky team.

PlayUp Releases Version 2.0 of Fan-Interaction App

PlayUp has released version 2.0 of its fan-based social networking app, with improved navigation and “Live Now” scoreboards for individual sports.

PlayUp, which has signed several exclusive deals with college conferences and schools this year and also hosted NFL players for exclusive online chats during the Super Bowl, said the new features available immediately include:

— The ability to choose your favorite leagues to easily see live scores, stats and hangouts for the sports you care about most
— “Live Now” scoreboards by individual sports
— An enhanced interface with bigger and brighter graphics
— Improved navigation and user experience including faster load times, better calendars, and quicker access to live updates
— Enhanced Facebook and Twitter integration
— The ability to receive notification alerts when fans add you as a friend or when you are invited to a game
— The ability to message easily across multiple rooms with “Recent Hangouts” for the latest action you and your friends have been following

NFL Stars Steven Jackson, Stevie Johnson Will ‘Hang Out’ On PlayUp for Super Bowl

Fan-interaction app PlayUp has recruited NFL stars Steven Jackson and Stevie Johnson to “hang out” during Sunday’s Super Bowl, when fans can message and follow the stars’ take on the big game between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants.

Rams running back Jackson, owner of seven straight 1,000-yard seasons, can be found Sunday on PlayUp under the username “sj39,” while Buffalo’s electric reciever Johnson can be found under the username “StevieJohnson13.” According to PlayUp, both players will create their own public virtual rooms in the PlayUp app to chat with fans, and will also visit other public virtual rooms to further interact with fans using PlayUp to chat, talk and share smack about the game.

“We are thrilled that both stars are choosing PlayUp to engage with passionate football fans over the Super Bowl,” said Dennis Lee, PlayUp USA CEO, in a statement. According to PlayUp, both players are already active in other social media forums: Jackson has more than 138,000 Twitter followers and almost 48,000 Facebook fans, while Johnson currently has more than 78,800 Twitter followers and 17,400 Facebook fans, according to PlayUp.

PlayUp Signs Exclusive Deal with Fordham Athletics

In what is expected to be the first of a series of school-exclusive deals, fan-based social network app provider PlayUp is partnering with Fordham Athletics to be the exclusive “fan engagement partner” for the sports teams at the New York-based Fordham University.

Fordham said the PlayUp app, which gives sports fans the ability to track teams, scores and to converse with other fans in either small or large, or private or public groups, is a good fit for schools like Fordham who have interested alumni who might not be able to view games in person. From the press release announcing the deal:

“PlayUp is a very unique service that allows fans who cannot attend Fordham games in person to actively chat on their mobile device while following the action,” said Julio Diaz, Associate Athletic Director/Marketing and Promotions, Fordham Athletics.

According to PlayUp, the company will promote its app live at four upcoming Fordham men’s basketball games, and will be featured in television ads shown during the game broadcasts. PlayUP said it will also have in-game contests and promotions, part of a strategic move to make PlayUp the app fans check in with first when they are at a live sporting event. PlayUp pushes to China

PlayUp plans to launch in China in January, according to a China Daily report.

PlayUp is rapidly establishing itself as a global leader in sports social media applications for mobile devices. Launched in the United States in October, PlayUp has already downloaded 75,000 applications worldwide, according to an earlier MobileSportsReport article. By pushing into China, PlayUp establishes a presence in each of the three top markets for mobile sports. It is already active in India and Brazil.

The PlayUp application mixes live sports scores with sports social media. Its interface allows people to pick games to comment on, and easily filter conversations.

According to China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), there are over 952 million mobile phone users in the country, including over 102 million on 3G mobile networks.

PlayUp will be the first application of its kind available in China when it debuts in January, according to China Daily.
