Will NFL Concussion Issues Drive Athletes to Other Sports?

If you are a fan of the NFL, or really just football in general, you cannot have avoided the ongoing debate on concussions-an issue that was recently brought once again to the forefront with the tragic death of former NFL star Junior Seau.

I am in no position to say how this should be handled but I am curious if it will have an impact on the sport by driving multi-tool athletes to head to other sports, particularly baseball but I expect others might see a growing interest as well.

The death of Seau, Dave Duerson and others and the growing understanding of the possibilities of damage that impacts on the brain in the form of long term health issues such as Chronic traumatic encephalopathy, dementia, depression and others might cause players to consider a different sport, at least players that are good at more than one.
I will point out that while a growing body of evidence appears to point to the impact as causing the damage most also say that they have nothing definitive to link the two. Also when the damage offered is a contentious issue as well.

However someone, or more than one, is taking it seriously and that is the more than 1,200 former NFL players that are involved in the over than 50 lawsuits against the NFL over this issue. You can get a breakdown here on all of the cases so far.

That amount of players and the comments they are making about the sport are enough to make anybody pause about their intended career. But there are other draws to play rival sports.Pay and career lengths are also issues that could come to the forefront. According to this story the average pay for a player in MLB is $3.44 million last year and the average career length is 5.6 years.

The NFL claims that the average career is almost the same, at 6 years, although others claim that it is roughly half that at 3.5 years. The average salary is about $1.1 million. Of course there are a ton of qualifiers including bonuses, etc… but the biggest seems to be that in baseball your contract is guaranteed while in football it is not aside from the first years usually.

Crossover players are nothing new, both into baseball from football and vice versus. Reggie Jackson and Dave Winfield are always the first to come to my mind. Winfield was drafted by four teams in three sports coming out of college-The San Diego Padres as a pitcher with the 4th pick, the Atlanta Hawks in the NBA and the Utah Jazz in the ABA as well as the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL, despite the fact that he never played football.

Jackson, having been recruited to play at Alabama, Georgia and Oklahoma in college ended up playing football at Arizona State. Having broken bones in his back in a high school game Jackson new the issues with injuries and quickly ended up with the baseball team. Both are now in MLB’s Hall of Fame.

The current generation of baseball players has lots of athletes that played other sports at a high level, players such as the Twins’ Joe Mauer was a top ranked quarterback in high school, Rockies 2010 first-round draft pick Kyle Parker was also Clemson’s starting quarterback and others include Jeff Francouer and Carl Crawford.

Off course this happens the other way as well- with Tom Brady getting drafted by the Expos, Jack Del Rio drafted by Toronto and Jake Locker drafted by the Angles before all of these players went on the college and pro football.

I am sure there is no real way to see if the concussion issue, along with pay and career length, will make a difference. I enjoy both sports greatly and do not want to see a drop off in talent in either sport, but if the concussion studies do turn out to be accurate I hate to see someone die before their time just for my entertainment. However hopefully technology will come to the rescue.

NASCAR Returns to Talladega This Weekend

Nothing like a little controversy to spice up a race, and Kyle Busch’s fourth consecutive victory at Richmond had its share. The one that stands out to me is how the race ended. A caution came out for a hazard on the track with 13 laps remaining- the hazard apparently being a water bottle.

At the time Tony Stewart was leading and he lead down pit road, but Busch beat him back on the track and hung on for the last laps for the victory. Dale Earnhardt Jr. also passed Stewart, this time on the track, to finish second and pushing Stewart to third. The other top placers were Denny Hamlin and Kasey Kahne,

The other issue from the race revolved around Carl Edwards, and his spotter. Apparently on the restart after a caution that occurred when Jeff Burton hit a wall with 81 laps remaining, Edwards lined up next to Stewart and was told by his spotter that he was the leader. The flag dropped and off he went, and down came a black flag. At first told that he had jumped the start and passing the leader it was later ruled that it he left too early as he was not the leader. He managed to finish 10th.

It should be mentioned that the victory snapped a 22 race losing streak for Busch. In other news the top of the leader board is getting pretty snug with the gap between the leader and others closing, as well as some shuffling among the top 5.

Sprint Cup Standings
1) Greg Biffle
2) Dale Earnhardt Jr. -5
3) Denny Hamlin -9
4) Matt Kenseth -10
5) Martin Truex Jr. -22

This Weekend
The Talladega Superspeedway will be the home for his weekend’s Aaron’s 499. The track is a 2.66 mile tri-oval with turns banked anywhere from 16.5 degrees to 33 degrees. It should be a very exciting race as last year the track witnessed 88 lead changes.

The Nationwide Series

Last weekend’s Nationwide race did not have as much controversy, but there was always the spectacle of heavily talked about rookie Travis Pastrana. The race winner, starting off a great weekend for the Busch clan, was Kurt Busch.

Busch won with a great finish as the last laps were contested by Denny Hamlin with a great deal of side by side racing that witnessed Busch winning by a nose. The fact that Hamlin was in a position to challenge was a tribute to his driving as he missed his spot on pit road and had to drive around.

Kevin Harvick looked like a winner for much of the race, leading 158 laps, but fell back late and finished third while Rickey Stenhouse Jr. and Sam Horish Jr. filling out the top five. Morgan Shepherd led 4 laps, which at 70 years of age is quite an accomplishment.

Two heavily watched drivers, Travis Pastrana and Danica Patrick finished mid-pack. Patrick started 16th but ended in 21st while Pastrana started 25th and managed to pull up to 22nd and might have done better but he was hit with a pass through penalty.

Nationwide Standings
1) Elliott Sadler
2) Rickey Stenhouse Jr. -2
3) Austin Dillon -23
4) Sam Hornish Jr. -53
5)Michael Annett -65

The cancellation of two practice sessions yesterday due to rain and changes to today’s practices at the track has lead to an already set lineup for tomorrows Aaron 312 race. In order the top 5 are Sadler, Stenhouse Jr., Harvick, Joey Logano and Dillon.

The Big Ten Network expands to Mobile Devices with BTN2Go

Fans of Big Ten sports who are on the road can now take a piece of the conference with them, a sporting piece as the conference has expanded its Big Ten Network (BTN) presence to cover both mobile users as well as expanding its footprint on the Internet.

The BTN2Go features the live sports feed of the programming that fills BTN, it is simply made available to users of smartphones, tablets or access the site via the Internet. The BTN has done a staged rollout of the program, it debuted with the start of the football season last year as an Internet-only feature and then expanded to the iPad and iPhone quickly afterwards. A version for Android-based phones is expected within the next month or so.

The goal of the effort to provide fans of Big Ten sports access to games anywhere, at any time on any device, said Michael Calderon, BTN’s vice president of digital and interactive media. The network is currently looking at other platforms such as Windows Phone and connected devices including game consoles and expects to launch a new platform with the start of next year’s football season, Calderon said.

Users have to be subscribers of the participating cable or broadband providers, a list that includes Bright House Networks, Charter, Cox Communications, DIRECTV, Dish Network, Time Warner Cable and Verizon.

If you fall into that category then BTN2Go is free with no addition subscription needed and this gives you access to a huge amount of both current and past programming. First and foremost for many fans is the ability to watch live games. However games that are broadcast by BTN’s partners such as ABC and ESPN will be available the following day on-demand.

Calderon noted that a real benefit the program brings is for fans that do not live in the Big Ten area, where a game that are interested might not be broadcast, it will still be available on BTN2Go. Also when an event runs long, say the first of a basketball doubleheader, a user can still go to BTN2Go to watch the opening of the second game if that is the one they are interested in viewing.

The BTN has benefited from its founders foresight. When it was founded five years ago in ensured that it had control of all its digital rights so that the licensing issues that have the potential to stymie a program such as this do not exist.

Then there is also access to archival footage from earlier this season broadcast by both BTN and its partners. Of course there is highlight reels and coaches shows on a regular basis. The BTN also creates home grown series such as Original series such as The Journey, Big Ten Icons, Big Ten’s Best and The Big Ten’s Greatest Games that are also available for viewing.

Going forward the network is looking to add additional features to BNT2Go including possibly a social media module for Facebook and Twitter users, but for the first generation of the platform it focused on delivering a top video experience, Caldera said.
