AT&T, Golf Channel Missing the ‘Tiger’ Opp With No Online Video for Pebble Beach

For the second day in a row, we are incredibly frustrated at the lack of any online video opportunity to watch Tiger Woods in his PGA season debut at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am. Though the Golf Channel has live coverage today and yesterday, the unique three-course setup for the Pebble Beach Pro-Am means no Tiger TV Thursday or Friday since there are apparently only camera crews at the Pebble Beach course and nothing from the other two courses being used, Spyglass and Monterey Peninsula.

So the reason Tiger isn’t on TV is that he played Spyglass Thursday, and is playing Monterey Peninsula today. We get it, because that means that Tiger will be on TV Saturday and Sunday, playing both days in front of the CBS cameras. But it’s an oversight not to have the game’s biggest draws on some kind of live media for the first two days.

This is a huge missed opportunity for the tournament and for Golf Channel, since there are probably millions of fans like me who would tune in online to catch some Tiger action even while at work. It’s hard to believe that with AT&T adding Wi-Fi clouds to the greater Monterey Peninsula to give fans at the tourney better wireless coverage that we couldn’t at least get someone with a GoPro camera on their head to follow Tiger around and stream that video? Hello sponsor opportunity!

Seriously, not having an online component is really a big error especially for events like golf tournaments where there may be an outsized interest in a single player instead of the traditional multi-camera, multi-announcer setup. I mean, online I have been able to follow what Tiger is doing in words; meanwhile on the Golf Channel they are showing some celebrity comedian eating a plate of ribs. I couldn’t hit the off switch quicker. So tell me how that strategy makes sense either to the event or the sponsors.

Note: the best places to follow El Tigre online today are the Golf Channel home page, where writer Jason Sobel is doing a hole-by-hole Tiger recap in real time. You can also follow Stephanie Wie, who is Tweeting Tiger’s round live. But really, AT&T and Golf Channel, you shoulda done better.

  1. Ya what the hell is going on here?? The most popular golfer on the planet is not being covered live on his 2012 debut but Kenny G is, and they keep saying that there going to show highlights of tiger but there not and i havent even seen Phil Mickelson WTF!

  2. I totally agree. Two days wondering…. are you kiddinggg me. One of the only reasons to watch and no cameras. Completely worth the investment. Very shortsighted and stupid.

I have been watching golf with my Dad since the mid 50’s and this is the worst coverage I have ever seen you do not deserve the contracr

  4. Just watched the evening recap on Golf Channel and lo and behold… Tiger highlights! But late in the coverage, with no setup. So my question is… if they had a camera on the guy… why not run a tape or two from Monterey Peninsula to wherever the broadcast truck was? DURING THE LIVE SHOW?

It’s like this tournament and its coverage is bending over backwards to keep Tiger off the screen. Don’t think we’ll see that from CBS on Saturday. Get ready for a Tiger-Phil marathon.

  5. The Thursday and Friday Golf Channel coverages were pathetic. Why waste time with Kenny G. and other boring personalities when the world’s top players were on the courses and NEVER shown! What a waste of time!

  6. No Tiger no Phil for two days, instead a bunch of D list has bins. Golf channel coverage SUCKS!!!!!

I wish the media would stop playing the eldrige woods crap all of the time….there is a great story on the leader board heading into sunday….Mr. Wi!!!! The media has turned eldrige into the Marcia Brady of the PGA tour……..where Jan says ….Macia, Marcia, Marcia….it is all about Marcia…….I am sooooo sick of the media playing to that arrogant ass…..he blew his marriage, did not make a great come back like the media predicted, was involved in now a bankrupted The Cliffs golf community in N.C……..and yet you (the media) have all eyes on eldrige. There are gentleman that hold the standards of this game to the highest esteem, and yet you focus on the bad apple of the bunch hoping he will part the waters and lead the people to the holy land. Our media has it bassackwards. I watched eldrige at his invitational at Aronomink where he snubbed kids of an autograph…..BTW…2 yrs. in a row…..but I watched Stewart Appleby, Boo Weekly, Dustin Johnson, Ricky Fowler, Davis Love III, Ricky Barnes etc. all take time to sign autographs and also take the time to spend with the crowd and make time for each and every one of us. My personal favorites are Zach Johnson (bejing says give’m Heaven) and Mark Wilson, as with both there is a personal story there…Zach and Mark are 2 of many that represent the tour the way it should be, as well of many others………get off the eldrige train and focus on what really is the heart and soul of the PGA tour…..you are missing out and not giving justice to the ones that grind it out on a weekly basis. (NOTICE HOW I USED eldrige AND IT WAS ALL IN LOWER CLASS….I MEAN CASE!!!!!!)

  8. Who’s this eldrige you speak of? You mean Eldrick?

and… I would have taken any coverage online. eldrige or Eldrick, or Lefty and Boo.

    signed, Alice the housekeeper

  9. Dirk Postupack says

who cares….tiger….tigger……eldridge….eldrick……he is the worst example of a pga pro on the face of this earth…….would not sign a golf ball at the greater Milaukee open bc of contract obligations…..they were auctioning off a bunch of golf balls all from the past winners of the masters and he refused to sign one….all in the gift of fundraising…..a local kid had a golf ball signed by tigger when in amature statis…heard that tigger would not sign one..and gave it to the commitee to complete the set….they auctioned it off…..2 PGA pros bought it and gave it to the kid that donated the ball to complete the set……..these stories about him are never heard, but once inside the ropes……one never knows tomorrows story…..there is one after he won his 2nd Am. championship in Orlando which I will save for another day…….Pond scum is higher on the scale than tigger / eldrick……bottom of the pond is well above him!
