Pebble takes second step in smartwatch space

apeb

Pebble has brought out its second generation smartwatch with the $249 Pebble Steel Watch, a more fashionable, and expensive version of the original $150 Pebble offering from last year. The watch is being shown at the current CES International trade show in Las Vegas.

The Steel Watch will be available in either a brushed stainless or black matte finish as the company develops a look that would not look garish on an executive. It replaces the plastic cover with Gorilla Glass and comes with both steel and leather straps.

The battery life is good for between 5 and 7 days and it is waterproof to 5 meters. The company has added a tri-colored LED and as with the earlier model will run both the Android and the iOS operating system. Scheduled to ship at the end of the month the move coincides with the launching of the Pebble Appstore, a place where users can easily find apps designed to run on the device.

Pebble, the Kickstarter favorite, wow the market when its funding effort went massively over the amount that the company founders were seeking, something that slightly harmed the company, at least public relations wise, by forcing it deliver the product late because it needed to build significantly more than it had expected in its early run. Not that this is not a problem that most startup companies would kill for.

Pebble was certainly one of the groundbreakers, if not the groundbreaker in the wearable computing technology with mainstream devices that connected a watch with a cell phone to bring data to your wrist. There were already sports specific devices that did some of the same features in areas such as golf and running but none that seemed to serve as a pure extension of your mobile phone.

That started a land rush by larger mobile developers to lay claim to this space as well, with Samsung, Apple, Google, Sony, Dell and others delivering products, planning to or simple becoming part of the rumor mill that they have one in the works.

Samsung, Qualcomm and Sony have already brought out products with the Samsung Gear, Qualcomm Toq and the Sony SmartWatch and I am sure this year we will see a wave of additional devices introduced to the market, much like how the tablet space exploded a few years ago. A number will be simply me-too devices while others will take the time to create truly differentiated offerings.

Friday Grab Bag: ESPN’s Open Coverage, Dell Smartwatch?

The Guardian is reporting that Dell could be the latest to throw its hat into the ring with a smartwatch offering. Dell’s global vice president of personal computing told the paper that it was exploring ideas in the wearable computing space.

With Apple, Samsung, Google and just about every major player in consumer electronics and/or computing it is no surprise. The Kickstarter success story Pebble and its smartwatch has to be something that everybody is watching. The company was oversubscribed as it sought funding with $10 million pledged and an exclusive deal with Best Buy with a preorder of 85,000 watches.

The news comes as reports are also emerging that the company has an additional two more Surface tablets on the drawing board that it will release sometime in 2014. ZDNet reported that a recently seen Microsoft roadmap includes the tablets as well as a host of additional offerings from the company ranging from an Windows Office App Store to enhanced Skype support.

Apple Store hits 5th Anniversary
The Apple App Store, now no longer a pawn in a patent battle, also had other news this week as it celebrated its 5th year in business providing apps and tools, initially for the iPhone but now also includes apps for the iPad as well.

The success for the store can be seen in the fact that the number of apps it offers has grown from 500 at birth to approximately 900,000 now. There has been over 50 billion app downloads in the five years.

Google updates maps app
Most people I know use Google Maps on a regular basis and they will be happy to hear that not only has the company updated the program but made it faster as well, a common complaint. The company has made the Android updates available now with iPhone and iPad updates coming soon.

It has navigation features that include warnings for bad conditio0ns on a trip including accidents, offline map saving and better exploration features according to an early review in The New York Times.

Athlete vs. Fan Gaming Challenge App OverDog seeks Kickstarter Funding

overdog

OverDog, a potential new entrant into the field of apps that allow professional athletes to interact with fans is now in the fund raising process at crowd funding site Kickstarter with a goal of raising $100,000 within the next month.

The app claims that it will provide fans with the ability to have access to athletes, but not in the way that a social media such as Twitter allows. Rather it enables fans and athletes to issue video game challenges and then play each other.

The app will be free and available for both Android and iOS devices, but only subscribers will have the privilege to challenge and play athletes. In the future the app is expected to have Fan vs Fan capabilities as well as possibly live streaming matches.

OverDog has a group of current and ex-athletes included in the effort including Matt Forte, Calvin Johnson, David Price and Rex Grossman. Games that a fan can challenge an athlete to include Call of Duty, Madden, Halo and FIFA, with the site saying that additional games will be available for play.

So far the program has garnered approximately $31,000 in funding and offers a variety of incentives to invest in the program which is expected to be available in beta sometime in April of this year. For $15 you could receive a 3 month beta subscription starting with its release and for $20 you get a subscription for the rest of the year. The app is not expected to be available to the general public until August.

Step up into the $95 range and you get 5 subscriptions, at $150 you will receive a permanent subscription and then there are several offerings at the $1,000 level including a choice of an MLS or NFL package that includes a game with a player from your favorite team.

While it is increasingly common for players to interact with fans over social media such as Twitter, and there are apps to follow favorite athletes such as this one from NASCAR, Sprint and Turner Sports, and there have been hangouts with fans such as this one prior to last year’s Summer Olympics.

This seems to be a fresh approach and should have great appeal to fans; the issue is going to be one of availability and interest. If you have to wait weeks or longer to play a specific athlete the enjoyment will wan rapidly. Also it needs to maintain the athletes interest or they may stop logging in to play. Well that is in the future and if anybody starts playing let us know how it goes.

Mobile Sports Report TechWatch: Happy Cyber Monday

Apple is seeking to keep the pressure on Samsung in the legal game and this week has extended its infringement motion against Samsung to now include the Galaxy S3 Mini, the Galaxy Note 2, the Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, the Galaxy Tab 8.9 and the Rugby Pro according to TechRadar.

The move looks to be in retaliation for a similar push by Samsung which has added Apple’s iPad Mini and iPhone 5 to a list of devices that it claims infringe on its patents.

Tablet shipments top laptops in October
You knew that the day when tablets would pass PCs was coming, but there had been estimates that it would not occur for some time. Apparently those predictions were wrong. According to market research firm NPD Display Search, tablet sales passed laptop sales last month, based on its following of the panels used in both products. In October there was an estimated 16.9 million notebook panels shipped while there was an estimated 18.7 tablet panels shipped. However this may be a one month blip as the researchers also said that there were many notebook buyers holding back until after Windows 8 shipped.

Instagram rules on Thanksgiving
This is probably a no-brainer out there for most people but Thanksgiving was Instagram’s biggest day ever. The photo imaging service reported that it averaged 226 photos posted per second over a 24-hour period, with a total of 10 million photos shared over Thanksgiving. That is a lot of turkey. Or a lot of turkey pictures, anyway.

The case is being heard by the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida. The request is for the source code for both the Mac OS X and iOS and Motorola is also asking for a specific date from Apple on when it plans to hand over the code.

Kickstarter kicked
Kickstarter launched a bit over a month ago in the United Kingdom and it now looks like one of is first projects is going to cause the crowdfunding site a few headaches. A successful funding effort landed a startup called Formlab over 2 million pounds.

Birthed from MIT’s Media Lab, Formlab is developing a 3D printer, however 3D Systems, a maker of 3D printers is claiming patent infringement and has sued the startup, as well as Kickstarter. The issue is over how a laser causes a synthetic substance to solidify as part of the 3D process.

According to a piece in PC Adviser, Kickstarter is also being sued by a rival crowd funding company called ArtistShare over the use of a database software program and how it can be used.

FundersClub Provides Crowdfunding for the Experienced Investor

FundersClub

A new challenger has risen to take on Kickstarter and the host of other crowd sourcing sites that have appeared over the last year or so, but it is one of the very few that offers actual equity in the companies that are using its platform. The FundersClub is an equity offering startup that used its own features to come into existence as it fully funded itself

It is also not as easy to use as the average crowdfunding site, where pretty much all you need is a buck and an Internet connection. Instead you have to be able to show that you are a serious investor with experience and funding.

That means that you have to be an individual that has a $200,000 annual income or greater or $300,000 with a spouse or investors with a net worth of $1 million or greater, not including primary residence. With that type of requirements it also separates itself from most of the existing crowdfunding sites.

It then has a list of investments that are available in individual funds and also offers investors the ability to invest across all active funds can use its FundersClub bundle feature. The primary types of companies that it will have funds for will be early, mid and late stage US hi-tech companies from around the nation.

It has several benefits that it touts for its investors including opening up funds that normally would not be available to even Angle investors due to the size requirements that they often have. It takes all of the individual investments in a single fund and bundles them it into what appears to be one single investment. When a distribution or liquidation of a company that a fund backs occurs th

e money is returned to FundersClub which then distributes the proceeds to the investors.

The site opens up private company stock and dept equity that might be difficult for small investors to access. It also provides a simple one stop investment site that handles screening, payments and documentation handling. There is a minimum investment of $1,000 and a maximum of $5,000 in a fund.

Currently FundersClub will operate at-cost, but over time it seeks to have a much fuller role in the market. It said that it will look to operate liquidity services for private companies, including employee liquidity program management for private companies, and eventually a trading platform for private companies that wish to provide ongoing private market liquidity to their shareholders.

I would not be surprised if after the JOBS Act, the law that basically enabled crowdfunding, finally gets a set of rules approved by the Securities & Exchange Commission others will also jump into the equity offering business.

The JOBS Act does not affect FundersClub because its requirements are ones that have been used for some time with accredited investors, the only real impact it might have is that once the rules are established it might open the program to the non-accredited investors that the act s designed to help.

One example of that is Fundable.org, which makes no mention of offering equity at first look on its web page but if you dig deeper you find that it has plans, at some point to do so, if it is allowed to do so after the SEC sets the rules.

One benefit I see from the formation of FundersClub is that it will be investing in more noteworthy companies. While I find a lot that I find amusing on Kickstarter, much of it seems to be rather frivolous. That could be in part simply because all of this is so new, or it could just be the nature of the crowd that uses that and similar sites.

Samsung fails to block injunction
A US Court has denied Samsung’s request for a stay on a preliminary injunction against the company that is preventing it from selling its Galaxy Nexus smartphone as well as for a similar injunction against it selling its Galaxy Tab 10.1 tablet.

The injunctions are the result of a ruling in a long running patent dispute between Samsung and Apple. The company wanted the suspension while it takes its case to the US Court of Appeals, according to an article in Infoworld.

Tablets to outsell notebooks in four years
A report from the research firm NPD Display Search predicted that notebooks will be supplanted by tablets and the mobile computing device of choice by 2016. It said that notebook sales will continue to increase, from an estimated 208 million units this year to 393 million units by 2017.

However during that same time span tablet sales will grow at a much faster pace, increasing from 121 million units this year to an estimated 416 million units by 2017. Among that factors that will fuel the growth are its improved portability and battery life when compared to notebooks.

Apple loses patent round in UK
While Apple has managed to block Samsung in the US, to a degree, it has failed in a similar suit in the United Kingdom, where the courts have ruled against it in a fight with HTC. The high Court ruled that HTC did not infringe on Apple’s photo management patent.

It also ruled that three additional patents that were in dispute were invalid, including apple’s ‘slide to unlock’ feature, according to TechWorld. If Apple had succeeded in its cases it would have affected both tablet and smartphone products from HTC.

Samsung, developer of some of the most popular smartphones, has reported that its latest quarter had a profit of $5.9 billion with earnings from its mobile phone division more than doubling in the quarter as Galaxy sales soared.

On the flip side is HTC, which had a very poor quarter, reporting that its net profits fell 58% from the same quarter a year ago, with a net profit of $247 million and it said that the current quarter’s outlook is cloudy due to increased competition.

LUMOback- the anti-couch potato device?
A sensor and app designed for better posture? That is what LUMOback is designed to provide. The sensor pad fits in your chair and vibrates when you slouch in your chair and provides feedback to your iPhone in an effort to promote good posture. Android and other platform support is on the horizon, the company said. The project on Kickstarter has already exceeded its $100,000 goal. I wonder if it is a comfortable vibration because I could get a pretty good massage while watching the NFL.

Rumors de jour
Amazon is planning on fighting back against Google and others by introducing its own smartphone and is looking to buy patents in that space first. Amazon has declined to comment.

It also looks like the next generation Kindle, the Kindle Fire 2, will be available in the fall as well. This is not really a surprise considering how hot the original Fire sales were during last year’s holiday season.

Is Apple preparing a mini iPad for Fall introduction, many sources say so. Numerous sites and news agencies have reported that a 7-inch version is on the way in order to fight Amazon, Google and others that are concentrating in this space.
